Focus on Textiles Back to  my roots!

 Young Fashion Designer UK Competition

"Thanks to Jo Bishop, a Textiles teacher at The Royal Grammar School in Worcester, who has raised my awareness this week of the Young Fashion Designer UK competition. Jo runs the Midlands region of the competition and there is also a centre in the south in Kent.

The competition is aimed at students 16-18 who have a passion for fashion and who deserve recognition for the excellent work produced as part of the assessed coursework; there are many graduate showcases but nothing for the younger designers.

The competition invites entries from across the UK and it is easy for students to enter as they can use their current Controlled Assessment / Coursework (although note only copies should be sent)  A panel of fashion and textile professionals select 18 finalists to attend a final day (either at RGS in Worcester or at Kent College). The judges include retail buyers, designers, education specialists etc. who will spend time talking to each student on the final day and sharing advice with them before they decide who should be awarded the top prizes (including work experience, exhibition tickets, fashion goody bags etc). "

Winner's Profile

Vicky Rukin, A2 South Centre Winner, 2010

Since winning the Young Fashion Designer of the Year Award for the A2 category in 2010, Vicky went on to study Textile Design for three years at De Montfort University in Leicester.

During her time at De Montfort, Vicky has completed an internship with the up-and-coming fashion designer Jane Bowler in London helping to construct garments and accessories made from a variety of dyed and moulded plastics. Vicky also won an internship with the international flooring company Amtico in Coventry through an internal competition at De Montfort allowing her to work alongside the design team for a month.

Vicky has just completed the final project of her degree, creating interior products including lampshades, wallpapers, cushions and an upholstered chair, using prints she has created from her own photography. She hopes this will lead to a future working in the fashion and design industry.
